There is no easier, more hassle-free way to start a charcoal fire than by using one of these. As long as you have access to an electric outlet somewhere in the vicinity of your grill, you'd be foolish to use any other method.

You place the heating element on the grate, with the plastic handle resting on the barbecue's edge. Cover the element with your briquettes, plug it in, wait 12 minutes, and then remove it. By that time, any charcoals that were in contact with the red-hot element will have started. Mound up the coals, wait a few more minutes, and you're good to go. No smelly, dangerous lighter fluids, no chimneys, no newspapers. What could be more simple?

The electric cord is quite short, so if your outlet isn't close by you'll have to use an extension cord. Just make sure it is a heavy duty one - like the kind used for power tools.

It's quite durable if used correctly. I bought the one I have now 6 or 7 years ago and I use it at least 30 or so... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Just don't leave it under the charcoal!!!, June 25, 2004

This starter is wonderful. But don't get lazy and leave it under the charcoal, like I did. You need to remove it after the fire starts. The plastic near the cord melts and the thing is ruined. I am ordering another one because I find I don't want to start charcoal without one.

this is the best charcoal starter we have ever used. the last one purchased is still working but is over ten years old and is used regularly every summer. I just purchased a new one as a back-up, but may not need it for a long time. Very reliable and very easy and safe to use.

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful Charcoal Starter, June 4, 2009

This charcoal starter is more useful and faster than just brute force lighting up charcoals on the grill. The one downside is that the first time that I used it, the internal coating/ paint cracked and has fallen off.

2.0 out of 5 stars Better than none, but not nearly as good as the weber, July 20, 2010
This review is from: Charcoal Companion Black Chimney Charcoal Starter (Lawn & Patio)
I bought this model at a local store 3 years ago. This year it started falling apart. The sidewalls are now very thin and have holes in them. The weber chimney charcoal starter is a far better design, with thicker metal and features that allow the charcoal to get ready faster.

I saw it used on the food network and bought it. The chef said she loves it because you don't have to use lighter fluid. I love the taste of my food now. I also purchased some Firestarter nuggets to not have to use the newspaper. The food taste so much better without the lighter fluid.

5.0 out of 5 stars No more charcoal lighter fluid!, September 23, 2006
By

A great way to start charcoal, get rid of newspaper and reduce petroleum dependency. Simply use two full newspaper pages to bottom of chimney then fill with charcoal or wood. Light newspaper, go prepare your food for the grill and when you return (about 15 minutes) a nice flame reaching the top of your chimney signals the coals are ready. Especially nice in winter when lighter fluid fails to evaporate and permeates the taste of the food. You'll get instant satisfaction from this charcoal starter and will never return to lighter fluids again!

4.0 out of 5 stars It still rusts., June 3, 2010

The stainless is magnetic, so probably it is 18/0 stainless. It shows rust sitting outside after one rain:(

After two months use, I upgrade it to 4 stars. I now keep it indoor in the garage. Functionally it works well and the handle never gets hot even when the steel tube glows red.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have, June 18, 2008
By

This review is from: Charcoal Companion Stainless Steel Chimney Charcoal Starter (Lawn & Patio)
If you are going to barbecue you must have a charcoal chimney. It eliminates the need for starter (which is both unsafe and leaves a nasty aftertaste on quick-cooked foods). Starts your charcoal quickly and brings it to cooking temperature. It's easy, too. And this particular one is a great one.
