Steven Raichlen Best of Barbecue Ultimate Chimney Charcoal Starter with Handle

Product Description

The Ultimate Chimney Starter with a Bakelite handle is the largest chimney starter on the market. The square corners give you extra control when distributing the hot embers. Environmentally safe chimney starter lights a charcoal grill quickly and easily without lighter fluid. Food tastes better and the charcoal lighter fluid odor doesn't permeate your picnic--or the environment. To use the chimney starter, stuff sheets of newspaper in its bottom chamber and fill the top chamber with charcoal. After lighting the paper through one of the perforated holes in the starter's bottom, it takes 20 minutes or so for the coals to heat up to the proper temperature. Simply pour them into the basin of your charcoal grill and you're ready to barbecue.

  • 7-pound capacity
  • Bakelite handle stays cool
  • Additional flip-up handle provides stability and extra control for pouring hot embers
  • Square shape makes it easy to pour
  • Model number: SR8041

1.0 out of 5 stars Price without Quality, September 23, 2006
This review is from: Steven Raichlen Best of Barbecue Ultimate Chimney Charcoal Starter with Handle (Lawn & Patio)
Bought this starter at BBQ's Galore for it's large capacity and hefty feel. After three uses the rivets popped out of the sides that hold the grate, I assume from the weight of a full load of charcoal and high heat. The "heat resistant paint" flaked off and the inside rusted despite a dry summer in San Diego. The bottom sagged, I had to drill and screw sheet metal screws into the bottom grate to get a few more uses from this ill made expensive mistake. I borrowed a friends Weber that he's had for 5 years and it is a much better product. The chimmeny effect does work but barely with this poorly designed product. Get the Weber, I just ordered mine from Amazon. I may buy three (BBQ Gifts) for the price of this wretched device.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Worth the Money, December 30, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Steven Raichlen Best of Barbecue Ultimate Chimney Charcoal Starter with Handle (Lawn & Patio)
I wish some reviews had been posted for this when I purchased it 6 months ago! I bought it for the extra capacity and the feeling that the extra money would bring a heavier gauge steel...wrong. Pass up on this and stick to the sub $20 ones that last 2+ years of heavy use. Mine is a piece of garbage now...great concept, poor follow through.

3.0 out of 5 stars it's good but could be better., July 5, 2006
This review is from: Steven Raichlen Best of Barbecue Ultimate Chimney Charcoal Starter with Handle (Lawn & Patio)
Well we've only used it once so far but I was a bit disappointed. As soon as I got it I noticed that the black paint scratched off. Also, the handle doesn't stay cool as advertised. It did heat the charcoal well so I can't complain too much I guess. I also like the fact that it's a square container instead of a cylindar for controlling the coals. But for the price I expected a little more.
