5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect when used properly, May 31, 2012

If used properly this chimney will work well and last a long time.

There is no faster way to light charcoal than lighter fluid. This is not a tool to instantly light the charcoal. it has to heat the charcoal up through it layer by layer.

I use two full sheets of newspaper crumpled up underneath, Then light the newspaper from every hole in the bottom. To those who complain about billowing smoke THIS IS A CHIMNEY and your LIGHTING PAPER ON FIRE, therefore you will get that. It takes about 10 minutes for all of the charcoals to be lit using this product and newspaper, but beats paying for lighter fluid and tasting it on my meat!

As far as the handle goes, I have used multiple brands, and you do get what you pay for, anything under 20 bucks doesn't have the metal through the grip, but if your careful you wont have a problem. Here is a tip, take off the cooking grate first and light the chimney while it is sitting on the charcoal grate, that way you don't... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Faster than I thought, August 16, 2012

I've only recently returned to charcoal from gas grills. My main reason for leaving charcoal was that it took so long to get the fire started. But with this chimney starter I have a bed of coals ready for cooking in 10 minutes. I can't compare with other manufacturers, but the Kingsford is well built. Two pages from the newspaper lightly stuffed into the bottom, light and let stand somewhere safe for ten minutes, pour onto your grill and you are ready to go. The instructions say to place it on the grill, but I prefer to keep the paper ash out of the grill. I had forgotten just how good and smokey real BBQ tasted.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best way to light charcoal, July 1, 2012

There is really no better way to light charcoal. This way leaves no chance for a chemical taste of lighter fluid to impart itself on your grill food. We mostly use our chimney for cooking with a Dutch oven and the chimney works very well for this too. We can light a charcoal for one Dutch oven and get another batch started so that it is ready if we need to replace the first round. It gets charcoal started fast too.
