I have a corner of my shed dedicated to "survival". IF (God forbid) we ever lose the electricity or the gas for an extended period, I like to keep a couple of bags of charcoal out there. I don't like to leave flammable liquids in the shed, so I started looking for alternatives to starter fluid. I bought a Char-Broil Chimney Starter, and stockpiled a small stack of old newspapers (we always have a 6 inch pile waiting for the bi-monthly recycle run).

Your going to also have a butane furnace lighter and a pair of long bar-b-que tongs to get the charcoals arranged "just right" after dumping them out.

My first time trying the starter ended in failure, but then I went on the web, and learned how to roll the newspaper in a donut and stuff it in the mottom with a center void --- Voila! It may fool you, but in no time flat, the top charcoals start ashing over -- I usually dump er out when the top coals show gray corners.

I use this thing every weekend and... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Charcoal Starter, January 9, 2011

This was a great purchase. I had always used lighter fluid on my charcoal and thought that was the easiest method of lighting charcoal, but no! This is by far the best and easiest way to light charcoal (and its enviromentally friendly as well). Simply crumple up some paper underneath, light the paper, and in 15 - 20 minutes you'll have a canister full of blazing hot coals.

I do like the hand guard on my canister as well. It's a sturdy structural design and allows me to move the hot container without any fear of being burned. This being my first charcoal chimney starter I can't say if the model I have is any better or worse than other models, but I can say I will never use lighter fluid again as long as I have a charcoal chimney starter.

I had never heard of a charcoal starter and happened upon it here at Amazon.com. This product is great - no more lighter fluid and/or starter sticks. Just roll up a paper towel with a few drops of olive oil on it at the bottom - and it works great! All charcoal grillers need to have this!
